Local Area Design for Koundampalayam along Sanganur stream
Coimbatore’s rapid growth has led to fragmented, underserved areas like Koundampalayam, with poor infrastructure and degraded water bodies. Positioning water systems and management as a guiding principle offers a pathway to restructure the city and build a model for sustainable urban development.

CARE for COVAI aims to Connect isolated communities—informal settlements, planned areas, and TNHB housing—through shared public spaces and accessible corridors. It proposes to Adapt to future climatic uncertainties by building decentralized, climate-resilient WASH infrastructure. The plan seeks to Restore underutilized lands into vibrant eco-public zones that integrate water systems and recreational spaces. Finally, it works to Enhance the neighborhood’s economic and social fabric by promoting skill development and self-sustaining livelihoods
The urban design framework integrates mobility, blue-green infrastructure, open spaces, and the local economy to create a resilient and inclusive neighborhood. It aims to improve connectivity, manage water sustainably, activate public spaces, and strengthen economic opportunities for the community
The CONNECT strategy aims to unify TNHB housing, informal settlements, and eastern neighborhoods through dedicated NMT routes and vibrant green mobility corridors. It enhances access to public spaces and amenities, transforming the area into a well-connected, inclusive neighborhood.
The ADAPT strategy promotes climate resilience in Koundampalayam through decentralized blue-green infrastructure that manages water using natural assets like canals and open spaces. It focuses on flood mitigation, wastewater treatment, rainwater harvesting, and integrating WASH facilities into community spaces.
The RESTORE strategy transforms vacant open spaces in Koundampalayam into vibrant cultural and ecological hubs connected by green corridors. It leverages blue-green infrastructure to create public spaces like wetland parks, markets, and biodiversity-rich parks that foster community interaction and nature conservation.
The ENHANCE strategy aims to boost Koundampalayam’s economic vitality by fostering local employment, skills training, and entrepreneurship. It promotes community markets, vocational hubs, and mixed-use developments to create a self-reliant, thriving neighborhood.

Sub-site A centers around the Mound, a key public space that connects green mobility and recreation while serving both city-level and local needs. Surrounding areas, including TWAD land and the Muslim Cemetery, are transformed with blue-green infrastructure and native biodiversity, creating an eco-park that enhances flood management and community life.
